Learning Agreement
Name: Michael Simpson Course: BA Digital Media Production Unit: Extended Major Project Reference number: IMD603 Credit points: 60 Study hours: 600 Tutor(s): Phil Beards, Liam Birtles.
Synopsis of study
Level: 6
I will be creating a short video piece on culture. The aim of this project is to consider what we remember from exploring new places and experiencing new ways of life. When we think of a place or part of the world, we each have our own vision of what life is like in that place. We usually construct this interpretation from time spent there or more typically, the media portrayal of that location. News articles from a place will often give us limited or focused insight in to the reality of what it means to experience that location, often to better tell a story. Consequently, never really becoming an accurate portrayal of what life is actually like there.
If we consider the elements that make up our experiences whilst away, memories that come to mind are often things like the weather or the architecture, dining out or possibly a memorable event. These are usually moments captured hastily by an instant camera, that rarely, truly capture all the aspects of what it felt like to be in that place at that moment in time.
I believe that the most important element that gives accurate insight is the people that populate a place. It is these individual characters: their lifestyles both traditional and contemporary, their ages, moods and hospitality towards you that are regularly overlooked. These people are our connection to experiencing life in that place and it is the contrast of our lifestyles with theirs, which makes experiencing new places so interesting and memorable. Therefore, I want to reveal a side to a place that is rarely focused upon, so that the people viewing my video piece will feel like they have experienced the atmosphere of the place without actually going there.
I will be using my basic skills in cinematography and adapting them further to produce a video piece of a higher production value. I will be filming this project outside of the U.K and will need to fund and purchase my own video camera. Furthermore, I will be filming using a HDSLR for traveling practicality and cost.
Aims:
To provide me with the opportunities to exercise and enhance my knowledge and abilities in the development of a body of creative and technically competent work appropriate to my course aims and criteria at level 6. To provide opportunities for me to learn from the increased complexity and rigour of creative production require for this unit.
To encourage me to apply the advanced level of discipline and time management which are required during the unit. To encourage me to work independently, albeit with supervision, in the development of my work, in a way which reflects contemporary professional practice. I am also encouraged to work effectively as a team member where this is demanded by my project or subject specialism.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit I will be able to: Demonstrate the ability to rigorously apply specialist knowledge, understanding and creativity in the production of my extended major project. Demonstrate the ability to manage the complexity of practice demanded by the extended major project by managing my time and work efficiently. Demonstrate ability in the coherent use of various representation techniques, documentation and presentation to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Demonstrate my awareness of the ethical, social and cultural issue appropriate to the concept of a responsible professional practitioner, whether working independently or as a part of a team.
Assessment Requirements:
Body of work to be identified through and in the negotiated Learning Agreement 100%
Assessment Criteria (specific criteria related to the learning outcomes and linked to the statement of generic assessment criteria matrix): Evidence of realisation through the application of technical knowledge and skills – Specialist knowledge and understanding are evident and applied in my work (LO1)
Evidence of understanding through critical evaluation and reflection – Informing the development and management of my project (LO2) Evidence of realisation through presentation – The communication and presentation of ideas reflects best contemporary practice (LO3)

Planner

I just got my diary today – LATE. As usual, I’ve been doing lots and lots of research whilst neglecting the actual start of my EMP. This has been mainly down to a few things – waiting for my marks, getting my new camera (blog on that soon), winterclash and getting over new year lag.

I am fully aware these are horrible colours for a diary, they also leak through the page so I will stop using them.

This diary/planner will allow me to keep track of work and also work to a schedule. Something I didn’t do for my specialist project very well. I will scan the diary in every weekend so there will be evidence of my progress that I will be able to use for my Professional Development and in my EMP write-up.
